Google Exec Walks Into a Conference on Sexism & Acts Like Total Sexist: We're Still Waiting for The Punchline

Eric SchmidtGoogle executive chairman Eric Schmidt inadvertently made a case for unconscious bias when he reportedly interrupted and talked over the only woman on a tech panel at South By Southwest -- and was called out by his own female employee!
Schmidt, who was taking part in a panel about the lack of diversity in the technology sector, apparently was talking over the only woman on the panel, so much so that a questioner from the audience pointed it out to him, to applause from the audience.
That questioner reportedly turned out to be Judith Williams, who teaches "unconscious bias" bias workshops at Google and is the manager of the company's global diversity program. Talk about irony -- or perhaps this was totally fitting.
It's unclear if Schmidt is just a mic hog who also interrupted the male on the panel, but since he was taken to task by Williams, presumably she had good reason to do so. I mean, this is her boss. You don't think she's going to mess with him for no good reason, do you?
First off, this shows you how unconscious this kind of bias really is -- I mean, there you are talking about the lack of gender equality in technology, and then you're talking willy nilly over the only woman on the panel as if what she has to say doesn't matter? By the way, the woman was Chief Technology Officer of the United States Megan Smith. Wow, what a title! To be chief of anything of the entire country? Dang.
Anyway, what really impresses me here is that Williams called out her own boss. That's not an easy thing to do. In fact, most would say it's career suicide.
So kudos to Williams for being one helluva brave woman with a lot of integrity. And perhaps kudos to Schmidt, who maybe is a mic hog (especially if the other mic belongs to a woman), but perhaps Williams was comfortable calling him out, knowing he would appreciate being corrected. Any boss who can take criticism from an employee is a great boss in my book!
Do you think she did the right thing? Do male colleagues or bosses ever interrupt you and talk over you?

ISIS Wing Claims Responsibility For Egypt Attacks That Left 26 Officers Dead

Militants struck more than a dozen targets simultaneously on Thursday. The attacks came as protesters continued to commemorate four years since the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak.
The coordinated attacks were claimed by an Egyptian wing of ISIS, Reuters reported. An army spokesman blamed the Muslim Brotherhood.

The attacks included a car bomb and mortars fired at a military base, as well as mortar rounds fired at a hotel, police hangout, and checkpoints.

About 60 people were injured, and state newspaper al-Ahram also said its office was destroyed.

Militants in the Sinai area have been at odds with police for months, the AP reported, and the region has been under a state of emergency with a curfew since an October attack that left 31 soldiers dead.
The attacks came as protests continued commemorating four years since the ousting of longtime President Hosni Mubarak.
Reuters reported 26 protesters were killed earlier this week by security forces. On Thursday, women took to the street to protest the death of activist Shaimaa Sabbagh.

Texas Court Declines To Stop Execution Of Man With An IQ Of 67

Robert Ladd is ineligible for the death penalty because of his intellectual disability, his attorneys contend. He is scheduled to be executed in Texas at 6 p.m. CT.
Robert Ladd, who is scheduled to be executed in Texas Thursday for the 1996 murder of a woman, has an intellectual disability and is ineligible for the death penalty, his lawyers argue.

After the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Wednesday denied a motion to stay his execution, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which is representing Ladd, filed an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court.

His lawyers said that Ladd has an intellectual disability and an IQ of 67 and would be considered ineligible for the death penalty in any other state.

The Supreme Court ruled in two landmark cases that executing inmates with intellectual disabilities is a violation of the Eighth Amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

However, Ladd does not meet Texas courts’ standards for intellectual disability, which, the ACLU said, were based in part on the character of Lennie Small in John Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men.

“Anywhere else in the country, Mr. Ladd’s IQ of 67 would have meant a life sentence, not death,” Brian Stull, senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s Capital Punishment Project who is representing Ladd, said in a statement.

Stull added that Texas courts “insist on severely misjudging” Ladd’s intellectual capacity, citing the intellectual disability standards that were “crafted from Of Mice and Men and other sources that have nothing to do with science or medicine.”

“Robert Ladd’s fate shouldn’t depend on a novella,” Stull said.

The ACLU has filed a petition for a writ of certiorari asking the Supreme Court to review the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals’ decision.

Ladd is also a defendant in a separate lawsuit that questions the “quality and viability” of Texas’ supply of its lethal injection drug, pentobarbital. According to the lawsuit, there were concerns that the state’s dwindling supply of compounded pentobarbital was no longer viable and would cause Ladd excruciating pain, violating the Eighth Amendment.

An appeal to grant a temporary stay of execution was rejected by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

His attorney in this case, Maurie Levin, has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court to halt the execution.
In 1997, Ladd was sentenced to death for raping and murdering Vickie Ann Garner at her home.

Garner, 38, was “borderline mentally retarded” and worked at the Andrews Center, which helped people with intellectual disabilities and mental illnesses employment. She was found raped and beaten to death at her home, according to court documents. Her house had also been burglarized and set on fire.

Prior to her death, Garner’s legs and wrist had been bound by a cord.

Before Garner’s death, Ladd had served 16 years of a 40-year sentence for the 1978 murder of a woman and two children. Their house was also set on fire.

When he was 13, Ladd was first labeled “fairly obviously retarded” by the Texas Youth Commission, his appeal stated. In an affidavit, the psychiatrist confirmed his initial diagnosis of mental retardation after Ladd’s IQ test and three interviews. Ladd logged an IQ score of 67.

At age 36, Ladd also qualified for services at the Andrews Center, the ACLU said.

“Robert Ladd’s life is full of evidence of his intellectual disability, and he doesn’t belong on death row,” Stull said.

Family Of Man Shot By Police In Brooklyn Stairwell Files $50-Million Claim

The family of an unarmed man shot in the stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project by police has filed a $50-million claim against New York City, often the precursor to a lawsuit.

Kimberley Gallinger, the mother of 28-year-old Akai Gurley’s daughter, filed a claim against the city, the New York Police Department, and the two individual police offcers, the Associated Press reported. Another claim was filed against the city’s housing authority.

“The shooting death of Akai by the police was reckless and should not have happened,” Ballinger said at a news conference. “Akai was a great father and a good person who didn’t deserve to die like he did.”

Ballinger is seeking $50 million plus attorney’s fees for Gurley’s death, according to the claim.

Eric Sumberg of the New York City Comptroller’s Office said the claim will be evaluated on its merits. If a settlement is not reached, Ballinger could file a lawsuit.

“This was a tragic incident and the city will review the claim,” the city’s law department said in a statement.

Gurley was shot by Peter Liang, a rookie New York police officer, on Nov. 20 in the dimly lit stairwell of a Brooklyn public housing project. Liang and his partner, also a rookie officer, were patrolling the stairwell. Liang shot Gurley as they both entered a landing.

In the claim, Ballinger’s attorney said the officer acted recklessly by having his handgun drawn in the stairwell without a reason. The claim also alleges the officers contacted union representatives or other individuals before seeking medical aid for Gurley.

Gurley was unarmed and there were no words exchanged between him and the officers, police said.

Police Commissioner William Bratton has called the shooting “an unfortunate accident.”

Audio Message Threatens Execution Of ISIS Hostage Unless Jordan Frees Prisoner

What We Know So Far

A spokesman for the Jordanian government said it is open to releasing Iraqi militant Sajida al-Rishawi if ISIS released Jordanian pilot Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh, who was captured in December.
The spokesman didn’t mention Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, who is also an ISIS hostage.
Al-Rishawi, an Iraqi, was sentenced to death in Jordan for taking part in a 2005 deadly attack on a hotel in Amman. Her suicide belt purportedly failed to detonate.

ISIS released a video around Jan. 20 demanding $200 million from the Japanese government for the release of two hostages: Goto and Haruna Yukawa.
In a video on Jan. 24, Goto was seen holding a photo of a beheaded Haruna Yukawa.
In that video, ISIS demanded the release of al-Rishawi in exchange for Goto.
On Tuesday, another video of Goto surfaced saying he has 24 hours to live.
The Japanese government said Wednesday that it is gathering information on the situation.
In an audio message posted on YouTube Wednesday, a man who identified himself as Japanese ISIS hostage Kenji Goto said Jordanian pilot and fellow hostage Muath al-Kaseasbeh would be executed if a prisoner exchange was not completed by Thursday.
The 30-second message said if would-be suicide bomber Sajida al-Rishawi was not brought to the Turkish border by the Jordanian government at sundown local time, al-Kaseasbeh would be killed immediately. youtube.com

Man Who Discovered $400 Million Gold Treasure Nabbed After Two Years On The Run

A treasure hunter turned fugitive accused of cheating his investors out of the millions he scooped up from a shipwreck has been captured after more than two years on the run.
U.S. marshals arrested Tommy Thompson and his girlfriend, Alison Antekeier, at a hotel in Vero Beach, Florida, after a worldwide search, the agency said Wednesday.

“Thompson was one of the most intelligent fugitives ever sought by the U.S. Marshals and he had vast financial resources at his disposal,” U.S. Marshal Peter Tobin said in a statement. “This investigation and these arrests reflect great credit upon the Deputies of the U.S. Marshals Service and our agency as a whole.”
The arrest is just the latest chapter in a strange legal saga involving one of the most famous shipwrecks in U.S. history.
The SS Central America, also known as the “Ship of Gold,” was a freighter that traveled from Central America to the East Coast.

In 1857, it sank in the Atlantic Ocean during a hurricane with 21 tons of gold in its cargo hold.

The shipwreck, which was the most famous of its century, helped contribute to the economic crisis known as the Panic of 1857.
More than a century later, in 1988, Thompson made history by discovering the shipwreck and recovering gold coins and bars worth up to $400 million.

White House: The Federal Government Still Opposes Legalizing Marijuana

WASHINGTON — When Loretta Lynch told senators “I do not support the legalization of marijuana” during her confirmation hearing for Attorney General Wednesday, she upset a delicate balance for an Obama administration that has expressed support for current federal law banning pot use while also signaling a desire to loosen federal restrictions on the drug.

A White House official told BuzzFeed News Wednesday evening that Lynch’s unequivocal opposition to marijuana legalization didn’t set a new tone.

“Our position has been clear — marijuana remains illegal under Federal law,” the official said in an email when asked if Lynch stated the administration position in her confirmation hearing. “The Federal Government opposes drug legalization because it runs counter to a public health and safety approach to drug policy.”

But Obama has not been as hardline about marijuana as Lynch was Wednesday. Speaking to YouTube vlogger Hank Green last week, Obama said that pot was not a priority as the legal landscape has become muddied by states legalizing recreational use.

“The position of my administration has been that we still have federal laws that classify marijuana as an illegal substance,” Obama said. “But we’re not going to spend a lot of resources trying to turn back decisions that have been made at the state level on this issue.”

Obama told the New Yorker last year that he doesn’t think marijuana is any more dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes. In the interview with Green, he openly questioned the government’s current approach to marijuana enforcement.

“You know, what we have done is instead of focusing on treatment, the same way we focused, say, with tobacco or drunk driving or other problems where we treat it as a public health problem, we’ve treated this exclusively as a criminal problem,” Obama said. “And I think that it’s been counterproductive, and it’s been, you know, devastating in a lot of minority communities. It presents the possibility at least of unequal application of the law. And that has to be changed.”

As he has in the past, Obama pivoted the question about marijuana to the push for changes to federal sentencing laws for drug offenders, which he has supported since the beginning of his presidency.

Since Colorado and Washington passed their state laws legalizing pot, the Justice Department has promised not to make prosecutions of recreational or medicinal users of marijuana a priority.

The White House official reiterated that stance after Lynch’s testimony Wednesday. If confirmed, Lynch would be in charge of managing the prosecutorial discretion rules as Attorney General.

“The Administration’s position on enforcement has been clear and consistent: while the prosecution of drug traffickers remains an important priority, targeting individual marijuana users – especially those with serious illnesses and their caregivers – is not the best allocation of limited Federal law enforcement resources,” the official wrote.

Florida Mom Who Fired Warning Shots Toward Abusive Husband Released From Prison

Marissa Alexander, the 34-year-old mother who claimed she fired warning shots at her abusive husband, was released from jail Tuesday after she plead guilty to assault. She will remain under house arrest for an additional two years.

The Florida mother’s case drew nationwide attention. On Aug. 1, 2010, Alexander and her estranged husband Rico Gray entered got into an altercation in her home that resulted in Gray grabbing her neck. Alexander ran to the garage, grabbed a legally registered gun and fired three warning shots in his direction.

She had given birth to her daughter nine days before.

During her 2012 hearing at the Duval County court, Alexander sought protection under Florida’s Stand Your Ground laws, which George Zimmerman used, in part,in his acquittal while facing charges for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin.

Her defense strategy was unsuccessful. A jury convicted her in 12 minutes of three felony charges. She was sentenced to 20 years in jail.

In November, Alexander accepted a plea deal during her appeal in order to avoid an increased sentence of 60 years in prison for possession of a deadly weapon with an intent to harm.

Democrats Want Time Limit On War Against ISIS

WASHINGTON — House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Adam Schiff Wednesday introduced narrowly crafted legislation authorizing the Obama administration to wage a limited, three-year war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria while prohibiting the use of ground troops.

Schiff’s bill, which is similar to legislation the California Democrat introduced last year, will almost certainly face stiff opposition from the Obama administration and Republican leaders in both chambers, all of whom favor a far more expansive authorization.

But his bill stakes out an early, bright line position for the growing coalition of lawmakers who favor reining in the administration’s ability to essentially wage unlimited war against terrorists.

“There is no doubt that our current offensive amounts to war, and Congress should take action both to authorize its prosecution and to set limits on that authorization so it may not be used by any future administration in a manner contrary to our intent,” Schiff said in a statement.

The White House’s current war effort against ISIS has been conducted under a 2001 Authorized Use of Military Force bill originally designed to respond to Al Qaeda’s attacks on the United States in 2001.

But that 60-word law has been read extremely broadly by the Bush and Obama administrations to allow for attacks in Somalia, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. That has led to bipartisan charges that the executive branch has overstepped its authority, and a growing number of Republicans and Democrats in both chambers have called for tighter limits on the war effort.

In addition to barring the use of ground troops, the new AUMF would also sunset in three years, as well as sunset the 2001 AUMF at that time. Additionally, Schiff’s bill would be “geographically limited” to contain counter terrorism war efforts to Iraq and Syria.

Although the White House and hawks in both parties have argued tying the administration’s hands is inappropriate, Schiff argued the overly broad interpretation of the existing AUMF should give Congress pause.

“If circumstances change, they should come to the Congress and make the case” for an expanded AUMF, Schiff told BuzzFeed News in an interview Tuesday evening. But “given how previous authorizations have been broadly construed, we would be wise to tailor this one to the current circumstances,” Schiff added.

House Speaker John Boehner has committed to bringing legislation to the floor in the coming months, and the White House is expected to work with lawmakers in drafting a separate AUMF that would give the president the kind of broad latitude he enjoys under the existing AUMF.

But Schiff warned that approach is likely to run into stiff bipartisan resistance.

“I think there’s a real reluctance in Congress to write a blank check,” Schiff said.

On Tuesday afternoon, the militant Hezbollah group fired four rockets from Syria, and two exploded in open spaces in Israel-held areas of the Golan Heights.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched a strike on Syrian Army posts after midnight Wednesday.
Later Wednesday, fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon escalated in a series of attacks along the northern Israeli border.
A U.N. peacekeeper from Spain was reportedly killed in the fighting near Lebanon.
Two Israeli soldiers were killed in the Hezbollah missile attack.
Israeli army confirmed that two of its soldiers were killed in Hezbollah missile attack.

Seven other people were injured, according to Al Jazeera.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the missile fired in Shebaa farms on the border with Syria and Lebanon.

A Hezbollah statement claiming responsibility for the attack said: “11:25am this morning, al-Quneitra Martyr’s group targeted an Israeli convoy with specialised heavy duty rockets in the occupied Lebanese Shebaa farms area. The convoy included Israeli artillery, an officer and several soldiers many of whom were injured.”
The Ministry of Defense in Spain released the U.N. peacekeeper’s name. Corporal Francisco Javier Soria Toledo was 36, and was married with no children.

The Israel Defense Forces launched a strike on Syrian Army posts after midnight Wednesday, a spokesperson for the IDF confirmed.

A statement released by the IDF said the attack was in response to four rockets that were fired from Syria into the Golan Heights.

The IDF also said Israel directly hit Syrian targets.

“The IDF holds the Syrian government accountable for all attacks emanating from its land, and will operate by any means necessary to defend Israeli civilians,” the statement read. “Such blatant breaches of Israeli sovereignty will not be tolerated.”

On Tuesday afternoon, four rockets were fired from Syria. Two of them reportedly exploded in open spaces in Israel-held areas of the Golan Heights. The IDF said no one was injured by the rockets.

The IDF responded by firing artillery, Haaretz reported. Officials said no artillery was sent to Israeli-controlled areas.

Israeli officials said the rocket attack was most likely a joint effort by Hezbollah and the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which came just days after a series of Israeli airstrikes in Syria that reportedly killed the son of a high-ranking Hezbollah military officer, an Iranian general, and others.

Kidnapped Boy, 3, Helps Police Find Him After Answering Phone Call in Stolen Car

How about this baby genius? A kidnapped Utah toddler and his mom were reunited on Tuesday, Jan. 13, after the little one helped police locate him.

His mother Elizabeth Barrios spoke to Salt Lake City's local ABC affiliate about the ordeal, expressing her relief while holding her 3-year-old son Aiden in her arms.

"I went outside," Barrios recalled, "and my car was driving away, with my 3-year-old in it." (Authorities warned civilians from leaving their cars running unattended, even during the cold winter months.)
Police learned from the petrified parent during her filing that her cell phone was still inside the stolen vehicle. She added to authorities that little Aiden knew how to unlock the device with her password, which prompted police to call the phone.

Luckily, he was the one to answer. According to ABC News, the distressed tot picked up the phone, and told police that he was all alone in the parked car. "The mom and the officer were both speaking to the 3-year-old on the phone," Ogden Police Commander Tim Scott told reporters. "The mom was trying to console him."
Barrios said her immediate thought was: "'My baby. What are they going to do to him?' I don't know who it was or what they wanted. 'Where are they going to leave him? What are they going to do to him?'"

Police then told Aiden to lock the doors and honk the horn. This move allowed an officer to hear it and find the child. Luckily, little Aiden was unharmed.

Cindra Ladd, Former Hollywood Executive, Accuses Bill Cosby of Sexual Assault in Shocking Personal Essay

And there's more. Former Hollywood executive Cindra Ladd, the wife of Oscar-winning producer and former MGM Chair Alan Ladd Jr., is the latest woman to come forward and accuse Bill Cosby of sexual assault. Ladd wrote about her alleged experience in a detailed essay published Monday, Jan. 26, on The Huffington Post, claiming that the incident occurred in the '60s.

Ladd -- whose husband has produced films like Blade Runner, Braveheart, and Chariots of Fire -- has a very similar story to the dozens of women who have come forward accusing the beleaguered comedian, 77, of assault claims. For the former exec, the incident took place more than four decades ago in 1969, when she was a young working woman in NYC.

PHOTOS: The biggest celeb scandals of 2014

"I met Bill Cosby while working in New York for the late film producer Ray Stark," Ladd wrote. "I was a 21-year-old single woman in the world’s most exciting city. He was a 32-year-old internationally known comedian and television star, one of the most likable and popular entertainers in the business. He asked for my number and I gave it to him."

Ladd said the relationship started off rather innocently. "We began hanging out, took in a movie, watched television and ate pizza and hot dogs in my apartment with my roommate," she wrote. "He was married to his current wife [Camille Cosby] and he acted like a perfect gentleman who didn't come on to either of us."

PHOTOS: Biggest celeb feuds ever

His polite and unusual behavior, though, made Ladd speculate the beloved TV actor's intentions. "I have to admit," she wrote. "[It] made me wonder what his objective was."

Ladd supposedly soon discovered his intentions. "One night we were going out to a movie," she wrote. "We agreed to meet at an apartment that he said belonged to a friend of his. I had a terrible headache but didn't want to cancel the evening. He told me he had a miracle cure his doctor had given him that would get rid of the headache. He went into another room and came back with a capsule. I asked a couple of times what it was. Each time he reassured me, asking, 'Don't you trust me?' Of course I did. This was Bill Cosby."

PHOTOS: '80s stars -- then and now

What instead happened was that Ladd allegedly woke up the next morning with a "vague recollection of feeling like I was floating" through the previous evening's events. "What I do recall, vividly and clearly, is waking up the next morning nude in the bed of his friend's apartment and seeing Cosby wearing a white terrycloth bathrobe and acting as if there was nothing unusual," she wrote. "It was obvious to me that he had had sex with me. I was horrified, embarrassed and ashamed. There was a mirror above the bed, which shocked me further."

Ladd wrote that she fled the apartment after some "awkward small talk" and subsequently "broke down crying" in the elevator on her way out. "It never occurred to me to go to the police," she reflected. "It was a different time and 'date rape' was a concept that didn't exist. I just kept asking myself over and over in disbelief why this had happened to me. Other than my roommate, I did not discuss that night with anyone for 36 years."

PHOTOS: TV shows gone too soon

She explained why she's finally decided to break her silence on the matter. "This is the first time I have chosen to speak out about that night. It is also the last time I intend to address it publicly," Ladd wrote. "I have no plans to sue, I don't want or need money. I have no plans for a press conference or for doing any interviews. So why speak out at all and why now? The simple answer is that it's the right thing to do. The truth deserves to be known."

More than 20 women have come forward accusing Cosby of assault, including former '80s supermodels Janice Dickinson and Beverly Johnson.

PHOTOS: Celebs fight back on social media

While Cosby continues to deny accusations and receives support from his Cosby Show costars, his career has certainly experienced a hit from the numerous claims. This past year, his NBC comedy project was pulled by the network and Netflix also axed a stand-up special that was intended to honor his long and illustrious career.

Ladd concluded her essay by recalling a time when she ran into Cosby at an event many decades later. "I have crossed paths with Cosby only once, when my husband, a highly successful Oscar-winning film executive and producer, introduced me to him," she wrote. "I was shaking, wondering if he would recognize me by my unusual first name. His reaction spoke volumes. To Bill Cosby, I was just another stranger."?

Dr Dre faces multi-million dollar lawsuit over Apple deal

Rapper Dr. Dre and record producer Jimmy Iovine are being vilified as scam artists in a lawsuit alleging the duo duped one of their former partners in Beat Electronics before selling the trendy headphone maker to Apple for $3 billion last year.

The complaint filed Tuesday in San Mateo Superior Court accuses Dre and Iovine of double crossing Noel Lee, the founder of audio cable maker Monster.
